Imagery

I was writing a section of my story today, being in the mood to do so, which I haven't felt for a while now. I read over it, and asked my sister to do so as well, and we both felt that it was actually a rather good piece of writing. What was the reason? I asked myself this, and the answer instantly came to mind. Imagery! For the past year or so I have been so caught up in discovering new words, thinking broadness in vocabulary was a faculty needed to help raise the chances of getting published. Of course it is an interest readers are lured to, but I thought it was the fundamental aspect. Until today. Until I read that piece of my creation that allowed me so easily to see the scenario in the story. Until I realised that imagery is the key to a great tale. So, now knowing - or thinking, if I continue to be in the wrong state of mind - that I am on the right track, I will keep a consistent method of writing which will allow much more interest to flow into my story.

Please give some words of advice if you know any other key aspects to successful writing.

  2. It's best to have a lot of depth to your writing so it can even be interpreted in a number of ways i.e. have underlying meanings. But of course, it depends on what genre and mode you are going for...like you said, you need to capture your own writing style and language. And of course, be as descriptive as possible because the image of the setting you have pictured in your mind may be harder for the reader to materialise.
